Tailor Your Resume
Tailoring your resume to each job is essential in today's job market.
Does that mean you have to re-write resume for every job?
Not necessarily. You can make subtle changes to your resume that will greatly
enhance your chances of being considered a good match for the job:
- Write your original resume with a specific career objective in mind.
-
When you decide on a specific position to apply for, read the job description,
duties, and qualifications very carefully. Print it and highlight
the key terms, phrases, and job functions that you can do.
-
Now look at your resume. Make sure that it:
-
Includes these same key terms, phrases, and job functions. If not, add to
or change your wording to match the company's language
-
Communicates the skills and qualifications the job requires
-
Contains a career objective that states you are seeking their position
or a similar type of position (e.g., "seeking the position of Marketing
Coordinator with Safeway, Inc.")
Similar jobs within the same field may require or emphasize different skill sets.
Make sure your resume highlights the specific skill set being sought. After following
the above suggestions, you may end up with several different versions of your resume
emphasizing different strengths and skills.
Keep track of which version you send to each employer.
