What is an option? What
is a major?
A major is a field you
have decided to study in depth. Each major requires you to take specific
courses, which are listed in the University Catalog. There are 41 majors
at CSUEB, ranging anywhere from 44 to 180 units.
What
are the requirements for the different majors?
A student is subject
to the major requirements in the Catalog in effect at the time of officially
declaring and enrolling in the major, providing a student maintains attendance.
If a student breaks attendance, the Catalog in effect at the time of reentry
governs the major requirements. To find out the specific requirements
for each major, consult your catalog or visit the major department.
When
should I declare my major?
There is no specific
date by which you must declare your major. Just keep in mind that major
requirements are governed by the catalog in effect at the time of the
declaration. When you commit to pursuing a given field of study can influence
when you will graduate. For example, some majors have more course requirements
and the courses are structured hierarchically (i.e. CHEM 1601, CHEM 1602,
CHEM 1603). Poor planning can delay your graduation.
How
do I declare my major?
Once you have chosen
a major, complete a "Change of Major/Minor/Option" form available
from the Admissions and Records counter located in the lobby on the first
floor of Warren Hall. At this time, students should also make contact
with their new academic department to select a major advisor and to formulate
an academic plan for graduation.
May
I change my major?
You may change your
major as often as you wish. Follow the procedure outlined above for declaring
a major.
How
do I get a major advisor?
Often a student and
a department faculty member will establish good rapport during a class
and the student will ask that professor to become his/her major advisor.
Other students simply go to the department office of their major and ask
the department secretary how to get in touch with an advisor from that
major. It is to your advantage to connect with a faculty advisor who is
interested in the same aspects of the field as you and who can be a guiding
force in your academic career.
How
do I know if the courses I transferred will meet major requirements?
Your major advisor will
be able to determine if the courses you took at other schools satisfy
CSUEB major requirements. When meeting with your major advisor, it is helpful
to bring your transcripts, course descriptions, and any other relevant
information.
Can
I take a course in a department before declaring that department as my
major?
Yes, unless otherwise
specified by the catalog. Don't take the course CR/NC if it is in a department
you are considering for your major.
How
do I declare a double major?
Use the same procedure
for declaring your first major. GE requirements will be evaluated by excluding
courses from the first major you list, not the second.
Can
I create my own major?
The Special Major allows
students, with faculty/administrative advice and approval, to actively
participate in the design of their own majors. However, students should
be aware that special majors must draw on existing courses and faculty.
Designing a special major in fields such as agriculture, architecture,
or additional programs not offered at CSUEB is not possible (Note: A Special
Major is not a self-study or independent study degree program).
What
is a minor and how do I declare it?
The minor is a program
of courses in a field outside of the student's major. Minors range in
size from 24-72 units, and like a major, involve specific requirements.
Students are not required to have a minor, however, it can be helpful
in obtaining future academic or job opportunities. To declare a minor,
obtain the appropriate form from the Admissions and Records counter in
the lobby on the first floor of Warren Hall.
What
is an option?
An option is a prescribed
pathway within a major that emphasizes a particular aspect of the discipline.
Not all majors have formal options.
